Tokyo 2010: VW New Beetle Pick-Up Truck Conversion

Even though most aftermarket tuners and coachbuilders at the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon turned their focus on Japanese models, there was no shortage of custom proposals based on European and American cars. The VW New Beetle pick-up truck conversion pictured here was created by Japan's Body Shop Hayashi. No word on pricing or any other details on the car for that matter. Hit the break for the full set of photos.

VW New Compact Coupe: Poor Man's Audi A5 Coupe Hints at Production Model Based on New Jetta

What you're looking at here is the Volkswagen New Compac Coupe (NCC) concept that we first told you about this past weekend. Based on the next generation Jetta sedan (forget about the Polo nonsense that has been making the rounds on the internet...), the NCC made its world premiere today at the Detroit motor show and it previews a production version that will expand VW's portfolio in North America and other parts of the world.

The German firm positions the NCC concept, which comes with a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, between the not-for-North America Scirocco Coupe and the CC hardtop convertible.

Although it features the same length ( 4.54 meters or 178.5 inches) and width (1.78 meters or 70.1 inches) as the current Jetta, the NCC is two inches lower at 1.41 meters or 55.6 inches and has a three-inch longer wheelbase at 2.65 meters or 104.4 inches.

VW Jetta Coupe Concept to Debut at Detroit Auto Show, Previews Sedan and Coupe Production Models

Those of you that are disgruntled with VW's decision to not bring the sexy Scirocco Coupe over to the States might find some comfort in the German firm's plans to stage the world debut of an all-new sporty coupe at next week's 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Called New Compact Coupe or NCC for short, the show car will give American consumers their first taste of an upcoming two-door coupe model that's based on the next generation Jetta four-door sedan and is destined primarily for the U.S. market.

Our sources tell us that the NCC concept is in fact an almost production-ready version of the Jetta Coupe though we're not sure if the German firm will actually use this name when the car is launched onto the market within the next year or so.

Similar in size with the current Jetta sedan, the two-door concept model will also showcase a new hybrid powertrain comprising of a small displacement four-cylinder TSI petrol unit and an electric motor that may find its way into the Jetta and the Golf in the very near future.

PS: Even though many car websites and blogs are claiming / assuming that the above drawing is / may be official, fact is, it's a julino billym sketch...

New VW Amarok Pickup Truck Helps out at the Dakar Rally

Just a few months before it goes on sale first in South America and then in Europe, followed by Australia and South Africa, the new Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck is exhibiting its capabilities by following the German firm's Motorsport team currently taking part in the Dakar Rally across South America.

A total of 35 Amaroks are being used as support vehicles by the Volkswagen team and the official organisers, ASO, throughout this year's 5,600 mile event which started from Buenos Aires in Argentina on 1 January and will cross the Andes to Antofagasta on the Pacific coast in Chile, before taking a southern route to the finish back in Buenos Aires on 17 January.

"We are thrilled to put the new Amarok through its paces as part of this long-distance challenge, the world's toughest, before officially launching it on the market," said Stephan Schaller, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

The new Amarok pickup truck will be available as a four-door double cab version from launch with a single cab model to follow in 2011. It will be offered with a choice of two 2.0-liter TDI turbo diesel engines producing 122HP and 163HP, with power being delivered to either the rear or all-four wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.

According to Volkswagen, the Amarok comes with a payload capacity of up to 1.15 tonnes and maximum towing limit of 2.8 tonnes. For more details on the Amarok, click here to read out previous post.

VIDEO: 2011 VW Jetta Sedan Spied in the U.S.A

Volkswagen is continuing the development of the next generation of its bread-and-butter model in North America, the 2011 Jetta that was captured here undergoing testing in Death Valley California. The camouflaged prototype model seen in the spy video suggests that the new Jetta will boast all-new sheetmetal with a pinch of Audi A4 styling cues in the profile and rear-end.

Underneath the skin, the German firm's new compact-size sedan will most likely use bits and pieces from the Golf VI which in turn is largely based on the fifth-generation Golf.

In the States, we'll definitely see the 2011 Jetta being offered with VW's latest 2.0 TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines. Even though there have been rumors circulating about VW's lively yet fuel efficient 1.4-liter TSI four-cylinder petrol with outputs ranging from 122HP to 170HP, chances are the Germans will continue to equip the base model with the outdated, but cheap to produce, 2.5-liter five-cylinder petrol.

Edmunds reported that the VW's Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla challenger could make its auto show debut as early as this month's gathering in Detroit, but this has yet to be confirmed by Volkswagen.

VW Polo Mk1 Dragster Pushes out 1,047HP, Runs the 1/4 Mile in 9.15 Seconds [with Videos]

Being New Year's Eve, there's not a lot of news today (nevertheless, we do have something interesting coming up...), so we thought we'd share with you this insane VW Polo Mk1 dragster created by German tuning firm, AME Racing. The lightweight hatch is fitted with a heavily modified 1.9-liter inline four boasting a massive Garrett GT40R turbocharger and a custom water/air intercooler for an awe-inspiring output of 1,047 horsepower and 950Nm or 700 lb-ft of torque.

Equally impressive is the fact that all that power is transferred to the wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox that is connected to an all-wheel drive system from an Audi TT.

AME Racing states that the VW Polo dragster goes from 0-100km/h (62mph) in just 2.3 seconds, from 0-200km/h (124mph) in 6.3 seconds and from 0-250km/h (155mph) in only 9.0 seconds while it runs the quarter mile sprint in 9.15 seconds. According to the Germans, the Polo is capable of speeds of around 300km/h or 187mph.

Volkswagen Passat CC gets a bit Sexier with New R-Line Sports Package

Volkswagen is adding a sportier touch to its Passat CC model with the European market launch of an 'R-Line' equipment package that was previewed at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September. Sadly though, the R-Line model is simply about cosmetic and convenience features as the package does not include any sort of performance upgrades.

On the outside, the R-Line sports package adds 17-inch or optionaly, 18-inch "Mallory" alloy rims with 235/45 tires, special emblems, smoked tail lights and a subtle aero kit comprising of a front spoiler and side skirts.

Inside, the Passat CC R-Line gains four customized tread plates in aluminium and a three-spoke leather-trimmed steering wheel with multifunction buttons. The standard front fog lights and the Park Pilot system complete the package.

The Passat R-Line leaves few wishes unfulfilled; even the base version of the Passat CC includes comfort and convenience features like sport seats and a climate control system.

European buyers can order the R-Line package on all Passat CC engines, with prices starting at €2,200 or around US$2,700 for the Passat CC fitted with the 2.0 TDI 140HP diesel and a six-speed manual gearbox.

Hofele-Design Converts VW Phaeton to Mythos Royal

Some say that the reason why the Volkswagen Phaeton -one of the most underrated vehicles of our time- has by all accounts been a sales flop, is because of its nondescript styling and the non-premium badge. German tuning firm, Hofele-Design, believes it might address both problems with the introduction of the Mythos Royale. At the end of the day of course, it's just another tuning proposal with both cosmetic and performance modifications.

Hofele-Design starts by removing all "VW" and "Phaeton" badges and logos and replacing them with its own sets. Next, the luxury sedan gets a new fascia with a redesigned front bumper and reshaped bonnet that houses a different grille.

At the back, the German firm added a discreet boot lid spoiler and a new apron with integrated trapezoidal tailpipes.

A new two-tone paint job that is said to be sourced / inspired from Maybach and huge 20-inch alloy wheels are part of the treatment as well.

Inside, Hofele-Design has opted for a two-tone colour scheme with Bentley-style diamond-shape stitching for the door panels and seats. The Phaeton's steering wheel has also been covered in leather while there's also new wood trim.

The Mythos Royal is offered with the same engine line-up as the Phaeton, including the 280HP V6, 335HP V8 and 450HP W12 petrols as well as the 240HP V6 TDI turbo diesel.

For those that want more power, Hofele-Design says it can tweak all engine variants. For example, with the firm's power kit, the 3.0-liter V6 TDI delivers an output of 275HP and 560Nm or 413 lb-ft of peak torque.

There's also a suspension module that lowers the sedan's ride height by around 40mm.

Hofele-Design did not release pricing for the Mythos Royale.
