Mercedes-Benz Launches SL Night Edition and SLK Grand Edition Specials

Two new special edition roadster models have been added to Mercedes-Benz's European range. Both the SL Night Edition and SLK Grand Edition gain numerous interior and exterior features, and are available for order now.

Starting with the SL Night Edition, Merc's flagship hardtop roadster is finished in an exclusive designo magno night black paint and features 19-inch AMG five-spoke light-alloy wheels in a two-tone, high-gloss finish, silver-painted front brake callipers with the Mercedes-Benz logo and darkened headlamps/tail lights.

Inside, the SL's cabin is dressed in black nappa leather and shining chrome trim while the seats also have arrow-shaped seams and silver-colored contrasting features. Finally, the sports steering wheel, shift lever and roof lining are in black.

Moving onto the SLK Grand Edition, the compact roadster is distinguished on the outside by the designo graphite paint finish, 18-inch light-alloy wheels with five triple spokes, silver-coloured fins on the bonnet and darkened headlamps.

Interior highlights include the standard AIRSCARF system, the new seats that are upholstered in basalt grey nappy leather, with red stitching and arrow-shaped seams. Basalt grey nappa leather is also used for the door linings and is contrasted by the designo pearl leather armrests.

Depending on the engine variant, the additional cost for the special models is between 3700 and 5200 Euro for the SL Night Edition and between 2300 and 3500 Euro for the SLK Grand Edition.

In typical Mercedes-Benz style, the special paint finishes will cost you an additional 3640 Euro for designo magno night black and 1800 Euro for designo graphite.

Mercedes-Benz's Detroit Show Sculpture Hints at Next Generation CLS Sports Sedan

Here's one veil that automotive journalists and Detroit motor show-goers alike won't be able to lift no matter how hard they try. See, what appears in these pictures to be a car gently draped in silver cloth is in fact a clay automotive sculpture. Its purpose? To offer us a glimpse of the future Mercedes-Benz design language.

"Creativity and inspiration are always the driving forces behind outstanding engineering achievements," said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

"With this work of art, we want to express the characteristic Mercedes-Benz design and, at the same time, convey an impression of our forthcoming new models."

Despite the fact that Mercedes-Benz avoided to say which exact car the sculpture with its blistered wheel arches and rounded tail hints at most, we assume that it gives away clues for the next-generation CLS four-door sports sedan.

Vath Lifts Performance of Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG to 745HP

German tuning firm Vath is upping the performance ante on the Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG once again with the release of a new package that increases power and gives the luxury coupe a more aggressive look. As if the standard Benz's 612-horsepower twin-turbo V12 wasn't already enough, Vath's engine kit lifts output to 745HP and a spectacular 1,150Nm or 848 lb-ft of peak torque.

The tuner claims that with this package, the CL65 AMG can go from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in just 4.0 seconds and reach speeds of up to 340 km/h or 211 mph. Even more impressive is the price of the kit that will cost you as much as a new C-Class at a hefty €36,890 or about US$53,100, including installation.

Other available performance mods include a sports braking system with 6 piston fixed calipers and 405 mm disks priced at €8,082 (US$11,600), 20-inch alloy wheels with Vredestein tires for speeds up to 270km/h or 168mph at €7,378 (US$10,600) and a lowering module for the airmatic suspension priced at €1,952 (US$2,800).

Cosmetic enhancements are limited to a subtle body kit with a carbon fiber front apron and rear diffuser fins, and boot lid and roof spoilers, which cost together €3,188 or about US$4,600.

Protestors Beware, the New €1 Million Mercedes-Benz-Based Water Cannon 10000 will Soon be There...

It's truly mind-boggling what humans will create to protect / hurt (take your pick) other humans - whatever the reason may be. What looks like a vehicle that came straight from a Hollywood blockbuster sci-fi film, is in fact the new "Water Cannon 10000" or as it will most likely be known, the WaWe 10, and it will be used by both the federal and state police forces in Germany to "water-down" violent riots breaking out at demonstrations and large events.

You'll find it hard to believe, but under all that Transformers-like armor is a Mercedes-Benz Actros 3341 featuring all-wheel drive and something that global warming protesters will surely appreciate -no pun intended- an eco-friendly Euro5 V6 turbo diesel engine producing 408HP.

The almost 10 metres-long (about 32-feet) and 3.70 metres-high (12-feet) WaWe 10 has a technically permissible gross vehicle weight of 33 tonnes.

However, Mercedes claims that even when fully kitted out and manned, the WaWe 10 does not quite reach this weight level as its actual operational weight is around 31 tonnes.

The WaWe 9's replacement has been designed to host a crew of five, comprising driver, commander, observer, and two cannon operators.

The riot-fighting truck comes equipped with a massive 10,000-litre water tank that is housed in the centre of the aluminium body and a Rosenbauer N 35 centrifugal pump with a rated output of 3,500 litres per minute at 10 bar that is accommodated in the rear of vehicle.

The three pumps, two on the front corners of the cab, each with a flow rate of 1200 lt/min, and one on the rear of the vehicle with a flow rate of 900 lt/min, are driven by a separate diesel engine meaning they be operated totally independently from the vehicle.

Other "highlights" include floor spray nozzles beneath the vehicle, designed to protect the chassis against fire, while the cab and body roofs are also fitted with an automatic protection system.

"As far as we are aware this is the most modern vehicle of its kind in the world", said Achim Friedl, Divisional Head at the Federal Ministry of the -we're just dying to crack a joke here but we'll let it pass...- Interior for Federal Police and State Riot Police Technology and Logistics.

The official handover of the keys for the special vehicle, which is worth almost one million euros or close to US$1.45 million at today's exchange rates, was made today at the federal police headquarters in Sankt Augustin.

All in all, the German government is planning to buy 78 identical WaWe 10s and bring them into service by 2019 as part of a total order volume worth 75 million euros or about US$ 110 millio.

Mercedes-Benz said that delivery of the first three series-produced vehicles is scheduled for 2010 following assessment of the prototype model.

ATT TEC Styles Up the New Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan

If there's one thing we know about German tuners is that they sure love kitting out the domestic market premiums. ATT-TEC's latest object of tuning affection is the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan, for which the company has created a new body kit. Priced at a hefty €6,452 or about US$9,250, the aero pack consists of a front grille, side skirts, new front and rear bumpers as well as a new set of exhaust tips and side air-vents.

Add another €3,869 or US$5,550, and ATT-TEC will throw in a set of 20-inch alloy rims shod in high-performance Hankook rubber size 245/30ZR20 or 285/25 ZR20.

And if that ain't enough, buyers may also opt to enhance the interior as well as the E-Class' suspension and engine with numerous performance upgrades.

New Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible in Depth, Plus 55 High-Res Photos

For those of you that fancy a topless E-Class, Mercedes-Benz has revealed a convertible version of the coupe that will make its world premiere at next month's Detroit auto show. The fourth member of the E-Class family, which essentially replaces the CLK Cabriolet, features a classic fabric soft top can be opened and closed fully automatically within 20 seconds at speeds up to 40km/h or 25mph.

Mercedes says that E-Class Convertible's boot capacity with the roof open is 300 liters (13.5 cu.ft.) , raising to 390 liters (13.8 cu.ft.) when closed.

The most significant new feature for the four-seater cabriolet is the AIRCAP system that consists of two components, a wind deflector on top of the windscreen that can be extended by around six centimetres or 2.5 inches and a draught-stop between the rear seats.

As well as reducing wind turbulence in the cabin, Mercedes says that the system also reduces the interior noise level. The AIRCAP can be activated at speeds of up to 160 km/h and remains in use right up to the car's top speed.

Other highlights include the redesigned AIRSCARF system that is integrated into the backrests of the front seats and provides warm air through outlets in the head restraints.

All E-Class Convertible models are equipped with seven airbags fitted as standard and a roll-over protection system that consists of two bars, each with a diameter of 35 mm, which are housed in the rear head restraints in modules behind the rear seat backrests.

At least in Europe, there are plenty of direct-injection engines to choose from, ranging from a 204HP four-cylinder diesel (to be followed shortly after launch by a 170HP E220 CDI model) to a 388HP V8 petrol. Here's the complete range:

  • E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet (diesel): 150 kW/204 hp
  • E 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet (diesel): 170 kW/231 hp
  • E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet (petrol): 150 kW/204 hp
  • E 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY Cabriolet (petrol): 215 kW/292 hp
  • E 500 Cabriolet (petrol): 285 kW/388 hp

In North America, the new E-Class Convertible will be offered only with the 292HP 3.5-liter V6 (E350 CGI) and the 388HP 5.5-liter V8 (E500).

Mercedes said that the four-seater cabrio will go on sale in March 2010.
